Our Wedding (Paleo-ish & Gluten-Free)
I know many of you have been following my work since long before I even met my now husband, Dr. Scott A. Mills.
And, while sharing these details and photos may not seem super relevant to what I typically share here to those of you who are new, I know that many of you have been curious about the behind-the-scenes of my recent nuptials for quite some time.
So, instead of sharing multiple photos all over social media, I decided to share some details of what we did in a blog post. I hope you enjoy.
Note: We don’t have the majority of the professional photos back yet, only some sneak peeks plus some Instagram fun from our friends, so I’ll update this post with more photos when we get them!
The photographers.
Before I get into the rest of the details, I have to let you know that my amazing and talented friends Kelty and Hannah (twin sisters) of The Weaver House are responsible for the stunning images you see within this post. If you get the chance to have them shoot your wedding, event, or portraits, your experience will be graced with their delightful and warm personalities, chill vibe, and generally relaxed professionalism. I felt immediately at ease when they arrived. They are two of the most kind and warm-hearted women I’ve ever known.
The Weaver House is based in Portland, OR.
The ceremony & venue.
We were married in the front yard of my parents’ home in suburban New Jersey, which is the house I grew up in as well. We had just around 60 guests attend, and the ceremony was performed by one of Scott’s best friends, which was very special to us. We exchanged our own vows along with some more traditional ones, and I definitely cried for a portion of mine! I’m such a mush-ball.
My dress and accessories.
My dress was a bridesmaid dress from Dessy Collection in ivory, purchased at Elizabeth Johns in Morristown, NJ. I knew I wanted something very simple, so my plan was not to splurge on the dress.
The tailoring was not perfectly fitted to me around the waist when I picked up the dress (for as bridezilla as I was not, I actually cried about this disappointment for a bit until I made a plan to remedy it), which I cinched with some ribbons I purchased at Michael’s. It ended up being a look I liked even better, with the ribbons that is, so it worked out just fine.
I wore earrings and bobby pins from Ann Taylor Loft, Toms platform wedges (that you really couldn’t see in my floor length dress, and pictured above I was wearing cowboy boots under the dress for previous photos so the dress looks even longer).
My friend Jennifer Kole styled my hair (she has also colored it for the last 1-2 years or so).
I applied my own makeup, primarily Jane Iredale brand, with some MAC eye shadows.
His outfit and accessories.
His shirt was from Mizzen + Main, pants were from Banana Republic, tie was Bar III from Macy’s, belt from Brooks Brothers, and Baja Slip on shoes from Seavees.
Our wedding bands.
We ordered rings from Etsy, from the One Garnet Girl shop to be exact. They have a chevron pattern and mine is rose gold and narrower while his is a white gold/palladium finish in a wider chevron style.
The flowers.
From Caldwell Flowerland, I ordered a whole bunch of white hydrangea, green “berries” (that’s what the flower shop called them), and then grabbed baby’s breath when I picked it all up.
My plan was to place 3 hydrangea in an arrangement, then place the berries and babies breath around them – which worked out perfectly.
We used these 27oz glass jars from World Market with ribbon tied around them as the centerpiece vases (we had 9 total). Photo from Instagram #docandflipsgetmarried.
I wasn’t quite sure how I’d make my arrangements and bouquet, but I did a little Googling, discovered that it was quite simple and would require floral tape, pins, and then whatever ribbon I wanted – so that was that.
I made the same type of arrangement for my bouquet as for the centerpieces, tied some ribbon around, then tied a long-tailed bow on as well. I pinned a brooch on the bouquet and called it good. It cost less than $200 for all of the flowers, plus maybe an extra $100 tops for the jars and ribbon, etc. Boom.
The food.
We ordered some of our favorite BBQ from Mighty Quinn’s in Clifton, NJ (all gluten-free items), stocked up on lots of hard ciders, wine, and a handful of fun Italian soda mixers from World Market. Photos from Instagram #docandflipsgetmarried.
The treats.
Dessert were gluten-free (not Paleo but totally delicious!) cupcakes from Kyra’s Bakeshop in Portland, OR (shipped in and I frosted them the morning of the event). The cupcake toppers were from Sweet Estelle on Etsy (they’re just sugar and color, totally not Paleo!). Photos from Instagram #docandflipsgetmarried.

I love how REAL your wedding looks and sounds. You both look great! Excellent
dress solution, the ribbon seems essential, I can’t picture you wearing
the dress without it. Sounds like a perfect wedding; not overtly glam,
very classy but not sterile, warm, and seemingly very fitting to your
lifestyles. Well done, congrats, and welcome to the club!
